Top 5 Foods I thought were Vegan But…

Hi Everyone,

Going Vegan has been one of the best decisions of my life… Not only has it benefited me with my health and general well being it has also opened my eyes to what I am putting inside my body and why! when I went vegan I started reading labels and researching what they mean and where these ingredients come from… so I just thought I should share the top 5 foods that SHOCKEDย me with their list of ingredients…

giphy

Not all of these or all brands have animals products in them but I came across the ones that did so…

Here we go!!!

5. Peanuts

Its a good thing I am allergic to peanuts.. so My husband was the reason I looked into this one… But if you have ever had Salted Peanuts you have Consumed PIG Hooves…

Some brands ( Check Labels) ย use Gelatin as an additive to help salt and other spices adhere to the peanuts. Gelatin is derived from the collagen in cow or pig bones, hooves, and connective tissues.

If you are Buying peanuts…Buy peanuts in the shell. they are vegan and less calories ๐Ÿ˜‰

4. Marshmallows

Oh I used to have a lot of this when I first went vegan…. but guess what…Marshmallows contain Gelatin… yes… again with the Gelatin!ย a protein made of skin and bones from pig ( or cow) and then I came to find out that it is used in a variety of foods including gummy bears and Skillets!!!!

Don’t worry though…. you can still have Marshmallows….Dandies Classic Vanilla Flavor Air Puffed Marshmallowsย are the marshmallows you grew up loving but vegan.

3. Orange Juice

2. White Sugar

I feel like a lot ofย people knew about this one before I did… but just in case you are like me and youย didn’t know…. White sugar contains Animal Bones…

tumblr_mianl3JgB61rorvmdo1_500

Yes….Refined white sugar is bleached in a process that entails running the sugar through โ€œbone charโ€ or โ€œnatural carbonโ€ โ€” both fancy terms for charred cattle bones.ย brown sugar can also be culprits, as they are variations of white sugar…. you may have noticed that I use Coconut sugar in my recipes which is a great alternative… you can also use Organic Cane or turbinado sugar as well….

1. Red Candyย

This will make the Non Vegan/vegetarians Cringeย as well…… but if you have ever had RED candy in your life chances are…you have Consumed Crushed Beetles….

joaquin-phoenix-shock-signs

Natural Red #4 is what gives most red candies their coloring, and it refers to carmine, a pigment extracted from the female Dactylopius coccus Costa insect. Itโ€™s sometimes listed as โ€œcochineal,โ€ โ€œcarminic acidโ€ or โ€œcarmine.โ€

This is Crushed up beetles ๐Ÿ˜ฆ and most of Red lipsticks also contain Carmine… but thats another Blog for another day…

  1. This is a good list. It’s always disturbing when you find out something else that isn’t actually vegan. Like fruit juice. I mean really. Even the more “natural” ones often using sketchy ingredients in their flavouring. Fresh is safest in that category. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Many are so unnecessary…I think sugar and some other stuff is vegan in the UK though (mostly)

    1. I think I read that Solver Spoon’s white sugar is intact vegan in the UK ( not the brown) ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. I never knew that about peanuts! Gross! I liked your use of the gifs by the way ๐Ÿ™‚ and another product which is not vegan is latex condoms! That one was a shocker for me. It has casein derived from milk in order to smooth out the latex. Gylde condoms are luckily vegan and cruelty-free though ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Thank you for sharing! I didnโ€™t know about the peanuts, luckily, I havenโ€™t bought the non-vegan ones, with gelatine in it. I use the โ€œis it vegan?โ€ app when Iโ€™m in doubt. Iโ€™ve also done a youtube animated video about consuming stuff as a vegan, if this helps anyone: ๐Ÿ™‚ https://youtube.com/watch?v=VEQVadmvU9w

Sugar was my big kill-joy! I didn’t know it until much later, and it’s what rocketed me into changing things around much more than I had before. I’m super careful about what I eat, read the labels, research the brands and ingredients now!

  14. There isn’t bone char /in/ Sugar, it’s just what’s used to filter it but there’s none in the actual sugar that you eat. Also, red candy is only derived from insects if it has the ingredient red 4. Red 40 isn’t the same thing. So not all red candy is tainted.

    1. I never intended to say that they all completely contain animal products, I have included the details below the pictures, about products running through bone char and about Red #4 ๐Ÿ™‚ that still does not change the fact that there is unnecessary use of Animal products
