Cruelty-free but not Vegan Products… what do you think!

Hi everyone,

So… today I just wanted to talk to you guys about something that has been on my mind for a while… A couple of weeks ago I encountered a Vegan girl who got into a little bit of a “discussion” with me on her channel about how I was missing out on so many great palettes and cruelty-free makeup Brands because I demanded all my makeup to be Vegan…

there are a lot of companies out there that have cruelty-free products but not vegan..

Here is just a few things that can be in your makeup ( even Cruelty-free)

Bees Wax,Carmine ( Crushed Beetles)  Glycerin, Lanolin ( Derived from the oil glands of sheep) Placenta,Bone Meal, Cystine,Gelatin(Protein obtained by boiling the skin, tendons, ligaments, or bones of pigs and cows,Tallow,Keratin,Urea ( animal Urine)

as you can see most of the ingredients in your makeup come from the remains of an animal, part of the animals or a product from the animal ( which can be cruel to the animal) I think its Great that there are Cruelty-free companies out there and Animals are not tested on and tortured but why does that not extend to the ingredients in the product…

I mean… it would TRUELY be cruelty-free for me if NO ANIMALS were harmed in the making of the product.. whether its testing or ingredients…If testing on them bothers you then Killing them should bother you even more and it is in some ways WAY more cruel than testing… I guess it doesn’t really make much sense to me!!!

as for my “discussion” with this Vegan girl, I managed to get my point across a bit, but what she would not recognize as an animal product was Bees Wax… Infact, many Vegans are oK with eating honey or using products that contain that… they say well, its not like any bees were harmed … its just a Natural process and product…

I just want to share the following video with you guys from ” Bite Size Vegan” she manage to summarize everything I have to say in her awesome video, so if you think Bees Wax or honey are ok to use… please take a few min and watch

Would you still call products containing BeesWax Cruelty-free?

    Hey! I just wanted to say thanks for posting the link to the ‘Is honey vegan?’ video. I’m trying to transition to a vegan diet and feel like I have a lot to learn. Your post was definitely very helpful. I guess I am going to be a bit more careful about reading my labels…

    Love this post! I think we all start somewhere and if people are thinking about products not being tested on animals it can be a gateway to buying all vegan products.

    I can’t eat bee honey….the thought of eating regurgitated food from any critter is enough for me….is honey vegan…probably not in my opinion….but that’s all it is..my opinion

        good post….haven’t eaten honey in over 30 years…I am sure its been some stuff I have eaten but not knowing….

    Hi there. How is anyone to know whether the glycerin is from animal fats or from vegetables? It doesn’t say on anything I’ve looked at.

      hi 🙂 I always have to ask the company whether it is Plantbased or from an animal, when they have a Vegan symbol on their product I assume it is infact plant based… I also use the App ” Animal Free” you can scan the item and see if it is plant based… that is a very good point though, and companies really need to clarify with their labels, especially since the Vegan Population is growing… thanks for reading 🙂

    Food-wise, I have found it easiest to buy things in the grocery under vegan standards, and then add my own animal products. I source local, farm-raised, well-treated beef that’s raised by my local butcher. I also get honey from a local small, one-man-business, who takes good care of his bees. Through research, I’ve also found a couple of great companies for milk, butter, cheese, and yogurt.

    I’ve taken to making my own shampoo and conditioner, and I get vegan cleaners and soaps.

    I’ve got a nice little list that I would love to build on, so if anyone has done their research on vegan products (and the companies that own them) , I would love to add them to the list!

      I think its great that you are taking the initiative to making a change in your lifestyle! I have a few vegan recipes and product reviews on my Blog that you can also visit… I am compiling a list but it is a slow process since I am in direct communication with the companies… as far as the ethically treated animals, personally I do not believe that there is a humane way to kill an animal or take their products… however well they are treated in the end they are slaughtered way before their lifespan… ethically for me there is nothing ethical about grass fed or local honey… even if everyone found these companies and decided to switch over to them for ethical reasons, pretty soon the demand would be so high that they would be forced to increase products and the quality of life for the animals will go down again… for me the only answer is not consuming meat… again if you are concerned with the quality of life of the animals, you should also be concerned about them being slaughtered for your food… thanks for sharing your thoughts & your site 🙂

    I completely agree with you. I read the labels on everything I buy, all makeup, clothes, etc, have been for 18+ years. When I buy shop, I try to buy vegan as well but sometimes you can’t but it’s always my first goal. About bee products, I don’t consume honey for the most part, it’s very rare and as for products I do use EOS lip balm atm/for some time until I find something just as good then I will switch.
