Coconut Oil Review: Refined or Unrefined?

Good evening Beautiful People! I wanted to talk about one of the best things that has happened to me since I have switched over to the Vegan lifestyle… COCONUT OIL! now because I am HCLF ( high carb low fat) I try to stay away from consuming oil and coconut oil is high in saturated fat… but no one said anything about eating it!!!! legs-1 Yes coconut oil for your skin…. I have been using Coconut for everything! I put it on my hair.. my arms, my legs my belly and my face!!! coconut oil is better than the average face moisturizer. And hair serum. And body lotion: “Commercial moisturizers contain lots of water, which makes you feel like your skin is being moisturized. But as soon as the water dries, your skin becomes dry again. Also, many commercial brands of moisturizers contain petroleum-based ingredients that can suffocate the skin. In contrast, coconut oil provides deep and real moisture. It helps strengthen underlying tissues and helps remove excessive dead cell on the skin’s surface that makes your skin rough and flaky in texture. It also great for shine and as a natural moisturizer for your hair.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/27/coconut-oil-benefits_n_1625631.html

pretty cool right?? at first I was scared to put it on my face because i thought I was going to break out! and well… I did 😦 BUT that was because I was using refined coconut oil! coconoRefined coconut oil refers to coconut oil that has been bleached, and deodorized. The oil is derived from dried coconut meat known as copra. Traditional Tropics notes that oil obtained from copra has to be purified with bleaching clays because contaminants arise during the drying process.

High heat is then used to deodorize the coconut oil to remove its distinctive odor and flavor. Sodium hydroxide is often added to prolong its shelf life. To obtain the most oil, some brands use chemical solvents to extract as much oil as possible from the meat.

They may partially hydrogenate the oil, too, which means it will contain trans-fats. MayoClinic.com advises against the consumption of trans-fats, noting they raise bad cholesterol levels while lowering good cholesterol levels.

That does not sound like something I would want to put on my skin… So when you are choosing your coconut oil, choose unrefined and organic 🙂 I really love spectrum and you can get it at your local health food grocery store! and its a big jar and not that expensive!!! there you go again beauties! You’re WELCOME! ( haha) 😉

  1. I recently bought virgin coconut oil and I have been wondering if it’s safe to cook with it? I make popcorn with it and they taste amazing, but because it’s unrefined I don’t know if it’s okay to fry with it.
    Thanks in advance

    1. I personally only use the unrefined coconut oil for external use…
I don’t see any problem with eating it!! for centuries people have been eating unrefined oil.. If you do want to use it to cook with, I suggest you heat it up very well to get rid of any contamination.. it is much healthier and more there is a lot more flavor 🙂 But you should absolutely avoid eating it raw as it is not as hygienic 🙂
on a side note… Coconut oil in general is very high in saturated fats so excessive use should be avoided! I hope this helps a bit 😀

  2. I tried coconut oil on my face as a moisturizer and I just didn’t dig it. Of course, there are plenty of vegan options out there for moisturizers and I’m still searching. I do, however, use coconut oil for my teeth and they look a lot better.

    1. that’s awesome! never tried it for teeth before! I don’t like coconut oil for my face during the day, however as a night “cream” it does a fantastic job 🙂 I have a few reviews on Moisturizers… Sky Iceland, Aubrey, Bluedaisy & Blissoma are all great vegan and cruelty-free face moisturizers
